Oh Vanity The Charlatans Reviewed By : Tim Kernutt

The Charlatans’ latest album, "You Cross My Path", is real raw-rock - experimental but oddly familiar. Single "Oh Vanity" is arguably a stand-out, with cracking drums and a stirring melody bound to win a foothold on the rock charts.  The chorus, "Promise me you will promise me/ You will save the one last dance for me", is so catchy I was singing along within one listen. Least of all for my neighbours, this was not an overly positive development.
 The live version of the song, included on the 'single', easily trumps the original, no surprise perhaps to fans who saw them at this year’s  T In The Park. But while "Oh Vanity" may well be one of The Charlatans’ most accomplished recordings to date, that should mean more for a band that has been around this long. the future is as bright as an alcoholic's nose on a cold day.
