One woman has almost single-handedly restored my faith in the future of music and that woman’s name is Santi White, aka Santogold. While I’ve never actually despaired of modern music going down the gurgler, I certainly did find the debut, self-titled album from this New Yorker refreshing to say the least.
Singles ‘Creator’ and ‘L.E.S. Artistes’ showcase a unique voice and some serious attitude. But can she sustain this over a whole album? Well, not only has she delivered but the package has come to the door personally gift-wrapped and handed to you by a smiling, well-dressed delivery-man who leaves you feeling there may still be hope for the world.
No stranger to the industry, Santogold has both performed and produced, and this shines through in astute musical choices perfectly complemented by equally confident lyrics. Working with some great DJs, producers and songwriters has certainly paid off; the production is razor-sharp. Some great electronic effects mix with traditional instruments seamlessly. But while she may have had some high quality help, I know the sounds I’m hearing are Santi’s own unique vision.
The individual tracks vary in feeling from cutely infectious to aggressive and unrelenting, yet the album as a whole remains cohesive. It’s a punchy, upbeat and edgy example of genre-crossing music.
They’re all strong songs but in particular check out the perky beats of ‘Say Aha’, the powerful, hypnotic rhythm in ‘Starstruck’ and funky ‘You’ll Find A Way (Switch and Sinden Remix)’.
My only gripe with this album? It was over too soon. Thank ‘gold for the repeat button. 9/10
